Tips For Keeping Your Natural Hair Moisturized

Keeping your hair moisturized is usually more difficult than it sounds; however, despite the effort involved, it is certainly worth it if you want to keep your hair well-hydrated, healthy and strong. Below, you’ll find tips to maintaining those locks of yours:

Skip the daily washes

While it might sound gross to skip a day of shampooing, it really is one of the best things you can do for your hair. In fact, most hair care professionals actually agree that it’s
better to wash your hair every other day, as opposed to daily.

Depending on your hair type, you can go up to a week without washing! If skipping your daily hair wash makes you uncomfortable, try alternating days with
co-washing, a method that’s more gentle on your fragile strands.

Conditioner is your friend

Conditioner is key in helping your hair retain its moisture. There are a lot of conditioners available on the market today; however, it’s important that you choose one that will benefit your hair type most. For example, if your hair is really dry, you will probably want a rich, heavy conditioner.

You can also use leave-in conditioner to have an even bigger impact on your hair’s health. Leave-in conditioners with protein are especially effective for strengthening damaged and brittle hair.

So are hair masks!

Try a deep conditioning mask every week or so to really seal that moisture in. There are several quality products that will get the job done--
Carol’s Daughter’s Tui Hair Smoothie, for example. If you’re into DIY, you can even make your own mask!  Honey and olive oil can make a simple-yet-luxurious (and delicious!) moisturizing treatment.

Try some natural oils

Natural oils can be your hair’s best friend-- they help seal in the moisture into your hair without creating a barrier. Other oils, such as mineral oil, can actually deprive your hair of moisture, as they block the cuticle from soaking
in moisture.

With numerous celebrity endorsements, argan oil is all the rage-- it helps tame the frizz without making your hair feel heavy or greasy. Plus, it has a delicious, nutty scent.

Emu oil is also on the rise-- it’s a wonder product that can do everything from giving you a healthy scalp, to soothing eczema and psoriasis.

A third favorite is jojoba oil: light gold in color, it will look lovely on your bathroom counter. More importantly, like emu oil and argan oil, it’s a
natural way to treat your hair.

Use a moisturizing shampoo

It’s important to find a moisturizing shampoo, particularly one that won’t strip your hair. Lots of shampoos clean your hair
too well, removing your hair’s natural oils along with the dirt. Try using a shampoo that is sulfate free, as harsh sulfates will strip the hair of its natural oils, leaving hair feeling dry.

Ease up on the heat styling

Are you one of those people who can’t go a day without reaching for a blow dryer or flat iron? If you are, you might want to take a few days off from the heat. Heat styling strips your hair of your scalp’s natural oils, leaving it brittle and damaged. Your hair will need some breathing room from time to time, so ease-up on that straightener! Your hair will certainly thank you for it.

Natural hair can be a pain to deal with at times; however, with the right products and tools, keeping your hair properly moisturized can be much more achievable.
